In the City of Kalama, the police department and its officers are tasked with Animal Control Services. The Cowlitz County Humane Society does not provide animal control services for the City or County, nor do they accept strays that are found in Kalama. In addition to providing education and enforcement for animal issues such as excessive barking, leash laws, animal bites and animal welfare, the Kalama police department also partners with area organizations to ensure a safe and secure environment for the people and animals of Kalama. These organizations can occasionally assist the department with short term fostering, medical care, and adoption services. The department has certain operational limitations and is most often called upon to reunite found dogs with their families. Though rare, in cases where an owner can’t be located, the department adopts out found dogs after 72 hours.
For deceased animal(s) found on Kalama county roads, contact Cowlitz County Public Works @ 360-577-3030. Felines present a unique challenge for the department since it lacks the kennel/sheltering resources for animals smaller than a small dog. In extreme cases, the department can lean on its partnerships to assist with stray cats. Residents are encouraged to remember that many owners have inside/outside cats, and while they might wander, they often return home on their own. Officers will use discretion in responding to reports of found cats depending on available information and if the matter is creating a nuisance or health issue. Officers are available 24/7. They can be reached at 360- 673-2165, or through the Dispatch Center (Cowlitz 911) at 360-577-3098. To report an emergency, dial 911.
